BMA Trainer Spotlight: Wise
Wise Katubadrau is a personal trainer with a passion for fitness and working with people. He was born in Suvavou, a village in Fiji, and raised in Australia, where he played rugby, soccer and basketball. The competitive nature of rugby drove Wise to take his fitness to another level, so he started training with BMA.
Wise fell in love with the BMA program and quickly got into incredible shape. “I was fascinated by their training methods and the energy I got from the workouts,” he says. “They really know how to motivate and inspire clients. I feed off my workouts and it makes me want to train more and more.” Also a professional acoustic musician, Wise found that training with BMA helped his performances, making him more confident and comfortable on stage. “Whenever I play music, I feel BMA’s spirit around me and it seems like nothing is impossible,” he says.Wise’s amazing results inspired him to join the BMA team as a trainer. A stint coaching a high school soccer team in Micronesia instilled in him a passion for helping others achieve their fitness goals—joining BMA was the perfect way to continue that work. He quickly integrated the BMA mindset into his interaction with clients, and strives to help others become confident and comfortable in their workouts and every other aspect of life.

My belief is that you can only go as far as YOU allow
yourself. Dream big, and reach high. Don't impose limits because YOU CAN ALWAYS DO BETTER, only if you believe in yourself. Fitness and health is not about the looks (big misconception!), it goes way deeper than that. It's about how it makes you feel, while everything else is a projection or a result of that feeling. I strive to be better, and BMA is the perfect outlet for that. It's my charging socket, my library, my playground." - Spase

What does the name BMA mean?
BMA stands for Body Mind Architects—we believe that every individual is the architect of his/her own body/mind construction. On a basic level, when the two are working in unison, great results can be obtained. Yet on the BMA level (the deeper level), we know that there is something much greater, more powerful, more expansive to be discovered... it is one's purpose and will. In this space, there are no limitations... the wisdom to make good decisions about your health comes from connecting body and mind as well as practicing self-reliance, which is what BMA philosophies are embedded in. When you can get to this level, you no longer need us—you have learned to be the architect of a healthy life.
How is BMA different from other workouts?
What makes BMA different is the workout we offer and the long lasting results it produces. We are with you every moment—from the time you walk in the door to the time you leave and beyond. We guide and challenge you, but best of all, we practice non-dependency. When you discover your own truth of what does and doesn't work for you, then you have learned to be the architect of a healthy life. Your results will be long-lasting because you know how to use your tools effectively to their highest potential. We don’t believe in making our clients “lifers.” We strive to get you to a place where you no longer need us.
How quickly can one get in shape?
It depends on your level of commitment. We will help you with every component of what you need to get in shape and live a healthy lifestyle. If you show up and participate with your best effort, you will see amazing results and will feel stronger and healthier.
What are some of the more specific changes your body will have?
Everyone’s goals are different—we design your workouts specifically to achieve the results you want. We are experts in areas such as gaining lean muscle mass, body fat reduction, increasing cardiovascular health, power, muscular and cardio endurance, as well as sport specific training.
Do participants have to be in good shape to attend?
Absolutely not. We tailor the BMA workout to people of all fitness levels, age, and specific goals. Even our beach fitness group workouts include participants from every level and offer exercise conditioning techniques that anyone can do.
What does a session with BMA consist of?
A session with BMA is generally 60 minutes long, which includes a dynamic warm-up, specific training and a cool-down.

Study finds exercise can offset obesity-linked genes!
Here is a great article by Jeannine Stein for The Los Angeles Times! It is another great reminder for why we should all continue to stay fit!
Even people with a strong genetic predisposition to obesity can offset their risk of being overweight by being physically active, according to a study published Tuesday in the journal PLoS Medicine.
British researchers examined the effects of 12 genetic variants associated with a higher risk of obesity among 20,430 people in Britain. Researchers calculated a genetic predisposition score for each volunteer that ranged from 0 to 24, representing the number of obesity-related variants they had inherited. (Most of the scores were between 10 and 13.) The volunteers also reported their levels of physical activity.
Armed with that information, the researchers determined that each DNA variant carried a 16% increased risk of obesity among those who were sedentary. But for people who got at least one hour of physical activity per day, the increased risk per variant was only 10% — a reduction of 40%.
In terms of weight gain, each obesity-related gene variant in inactive volunteers was associated with an additional 1.3 pounds in body mass for someone about 5 1/2 feet tall. In people who exercised, the extra body mass was 0.8 pounds, according to the report.
Previous studies have shown that physical activity can offset the effect of genetics, but most have focused on a single gene known as FTO, also known as fat mass and obesity. But many more DNA variants have been linked to obesity in the last three years, said Ruth Loos, program leader at Cambridge University's Medical Research Council Epidemiology Unit and the study's senior author.
"The more variants you carry, the more likely you are to be obese," she said.
Gil Atzmon, a geneticist at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, N.Y., said the findings underscore that DNA doesn't necessarily mean destiny.
"The message from this is, if you have a genetic predisposition for some things, you can change your lifestyle and contribute to better health," he said.
Loos said she didn't advocate genetic testing for obesity at this point because not enough is known about how these and other variants affect weight.
"Knowing if your parents were obese is a better predictor than knowing your genome, since you not only share genes with your family, but lifestyle as well," she said. But in the future, being aware of one's genetic makeup may help tailor obesity treatments, she added.

Benefits of a Beach Workout
Over at BMA, the staff utilizes a creative range of tools to sculpt an effective workout. Being fortunate enough to call Southern California home, BMA sits on the world-famous Venice Beach. Besides the well-known Venice Boardwalk, the actual beach is a beautiful, wide and clean expanse of underused exercise real estate. The trainers at BMA take clients to their open-air gym on a daily basis and results from training in the sand are undeniable. Combining soft-sand sprints with more traditional hard-pack jogging worls out leg muscles that many people didn't know they possessed. The trainers also bring exercise balls, bands and more props to help focus on certain muscle groups. Training outdoors is a preferred experience for many, especially with professionals from BMA leading you through your Venice Beach workout.

Oprah, the Dalai Lama and, yes, even Chuck Norris advocate the same thing: “reach your full potential.” But in recent years, that term has become so readily available and mismanufactured that it no longer carries the weight it once did. We all want to get there, but we just don’t know HOW. Sorry Mr. Norris, we never got that memo with the treasure map to self-empowerment... the one with the directions, tips and various starting points... yeah, no.
The term “full potential” is so loosely passed around that it’s giving Halloween candy a run for its money. Everyone’s talking about it like it’s a place to “get to” rather than a place of “being” at. Some people look outward for the answers, comparing themselves to airbrushed models in magazines or Ferrari-driving CEOs, not knowing all the answers we need are within. Other people try desperately to “fix” themselves, unaware that it’s a losing battle, because there’s nothing to be fixed in the first place.
The starting point to BEING your most powerful is realizing that you cannot fix yourself because you are not broken. The roadmap to the buried treasure is within you—where all the answers and wisdom lie. It’s that simple.

Reaching Your 50 -to-60
A BMA workout usually lasts 60 minutes. The first 50 are spent stretching, straining, and squeezing. You connect, contort and groan. You breathe in, build up and break down just so you’re ready for what’s coming next, what matters most—the 50-to-60—also known as the last 10 minutes of the workout. Wherever you finish your 50-to-60 this time will be where you start your 0-50 next time. In other words, today’s finish line will be the starting point of your next workout. The 50-to-60 zone is your maximum, your highest level of performance, your very best. This is where growth occurs—physical, mental, emotional or even spiritual—it’s your choice.
You can’t reach 50-to-60 without going through the first 0-50. The first 50 minutes is a peeling away process that exposes integrity. Are you checking out during the first 50? If yes, chances are you aren’t hitting your 50-to-60. How you show up in that 50 minutes is a good indicator of how you show up in your daily life. This doesn't mean you have to reach a new summit with each workout, it just means you are going somewhere you haven't gone before.
The first 50 minutes is important because it unveils integrity. Are you just going through the motions to satisfy your ego, the trainer, or the environment? Use the tools in your tool belt to get you through: awareness, connection, consciousness.

Tips and Tricks to Keep You Fit
Summer is around the corner and there’s some great incentive to get in shape with beach vacations and summer activities on the horizon. It's time to really buckle down and get it in gear. BMA is excited to offer these tips for prepping for everyone’s favorite season.
Commit Yourself. Make a pledge to up your exercise ante. For best results, try to do about 40-50 minutes of cardio per day, four to five times per week, before or interspersed with strength training. If you want to do more than this, just make sure you give your body at least one day off per week to recover. Don't skip the weights -- resistance training is one of the quickest ways to get more toned and build muscle, and for every pound of muscle you add to your frame, your metabolism burns an extra 50 or so calories per day (enough to prevent a five-pound per year weight gain). Grab a partner if you can—studies show people who have workout buddies experience some of the best results. BMA offers the Buddy Package where you can share a personal training session with a friend or two and get up to 20% off!
Fit it in! Many complain there is not enough time in the day for exercise. If your day is one big juggling act, then split your workout time into two, three or even four mini-workouts. Research shows you'll burn the same amount of calories whether you break up your workout or do it all at once. You can do a brisk 10-minute walk before work, climb your office stairs for 10 minutes at lunchtime and have a dance party in your kitchen while making dinner.
Switch it up.
Don't do the same routine every single time you hit the gym. In fact, try to alternate different types of cardio on alternating days. Implement interval or circuit training for rapid results. Add yoga, dance, kickboxing or Pilates into your regimen a few days a week. Even a brisk walk will give you significant benefits—for every mile you walk, you will burn 80-100 calories, nearly the same as if you ran the same distance.
Get Outdoors! The weather is getting nicer, so no excuses. Get out there and enjoy it.Pick an activity that feels like play, and throw yourself into it. Whether it's tennis, golf, surfing, hiking, roller skating or just walking on the beach, add some outdoor activity into your routine to supplement your cardio and resistance training. Having a variety of activities will ensure that you can do something regardless of the weather or time of day. Plus, it's an easy way to get your daily dose of vitamin D.
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate. Water fills you up, curbs food cravings and flushes the toxins out of your system. We've all heard the adage about 8-10 glasses of water per day, but don't forget to factor in extra for your workouts. Mix it up by drinking green or white tea, both of which are reported to boost your metabolism and burn fat. Really watch the juices, sodas, and alcohol, due to their high sugar content.
Up Your Fiber Intake. A high-fiber diet can lower your caloric intake, while making you feel full and less deprived. Experts state that fibrous foods promote weight loss in myriad ways: they require more chewing and thus slow down eating, speed the passage of food through the digestive tract, and boost satiety hormones. Try to eat 45 grams per day. Some high fiber foods include oatmeal (try steel cut rather than instant), grapes, black beans, lentils, apples, pears, baked beans and peas.
Snack Healthy. Throw away the candy and chips, and replace them with raw vegetables like carrots and celery, or apple slices, raisins and the like. Nuts and seeds are excellent choices as well, as they are rich in omega-3s and arginine, and very satiating. Other good choices include almonds, hazelnuts, peanuts and pistachios, as well as watermelon, sunflower and pumpkin seeds.
Sleep it Off. Make sure to get a good night's sleep. Studies link adequate sleep with better control over the body's "hunger hormones." Also, working out without enough sleep is almost as bad as not working out at all, so get your Zs in.
